An all-inclusive resort is a type of vacation resort that includes all meals, drinks, some activities, and sometimes even transportation and gratuities in one price. The exact inclusions vary depending on the resort, but typically it includes all meals (breakfast, lunch, dinner, and snacks throughout the day), alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages, access to pools and beaches, and daytime activities such as fitness classes and beach volleyball. Many land sports are included if offered by the resort such as tennis, pickleball, basketball, and rock climbing. Sandals Resorts also include gratuities and their staff cannot accept additional tips. Other resorts state that gratuities are included, but an additional tip is expected. Some resorts include airport transportation, but even if they do not, your travel advisor is likely to include them in your package.
All-inclusive resorts are common in Mexico, Dominican Republic, Jamaica, and can be found in other countries. Be careful when you see “all-inclusive” listed in countries outside of Mexico, Dominican Republic, and Jamaica because it may not mean the same thing. Some resorts in the Caribbean state all-inclusive, but their all-inclusive means something different. It may still include food and drinks, but there may be more restrictions about how much food and drinks and the timing of meals.
Some all-inclusive resorts also offer nightly entertainment, such as live music, shows or dance performances, as well as organized excursions to nearby attractions. Hotel Xcaret Arte, Hotel Xcaret Mexico, and Casa de la Playa Xcaret include admission to their several eco-parks. Sandals Resorts include scuba diving to certified divers and some of their resorts include motorized water sports such as water skiing, wake boarding, snorkeling, and glass bottom boat rides. Golf may be included or available at a discounted rate. When it is included, it is usually only the green fees so you may be required to hire a caddy or rent a golf cart. You may also need to pay for transportation to the golf course.
Some resorts include kids' clubs and may offer babysitting services for a fee, making it a great option for families with young children. Kid’s clubs are usually included in the price, but the age range varies. Most resorts do not include children that are diaper dependent in their kid’s club, but there are some exceptions. Babysitting serves are more often an additional fee. Beaches Resorts offers a special One-to-One Beaches Buddy program where your special-needs child is paired with a nanny who is autism-trained.
It's important to note that while most things are included, some activities and services may come at an additional cost, such as spa treatments or off-site excursions. It's always a good idea to check with the specific resort regarding their inclusions and any additional fees before booking your stay. Contact your travel agent as well as they will most likely know what is and is not included.
