Seydisfjordur, Iceland

We have plenty of time on the ship before we enjoy the port. Room service is the first order of business and it arrives promptly. We then play games. Mario Kart in the screening room and Uno in the Yacht Club. The Yacht Club is the coffee shop/library of the ship, and it’s stocked with books, board games, and puzzles. Besides our cabin, it’s my favorite area of the ship.

We enter the fjord and it’s beautiful. Mountains surround us and surprisingly large jellyfish surround us too. I want to stay outside for the views, but it’s too cold for me. We return to our cabin to watch from there.

My eight-year-old is hungry so he picks up the phone and orders room service for himself. This is a huge milestone for his communication and it’s really cute to watch him. I let him order whatever he wants from the menu. After placing his order he hangs up and I’m not sure if he even talked to someone. Usually, they verify the cabin number which didn’t seem like it happened. Also, he didn’t end with thank you or goodbye. Colton claims he was hung-up on. His call did call go through and there is a knock on the door about fifteen minutes later. What does an unhinged eight-year-old order? French fries, sorbet, and popcorn.

Scenic montage: colorful houses by water, black-and-white mural building, paraglider over hills, purple flower close-up, red house near shore.

We dock in Seydisfjordur at 4pm and most of the passengers leave the ship at this time. The ship is nearly empty and we leave around 5pm. Windstar has arranged a cultural experience for everyone onboard that is included in the cruise fare. We’ll be enjoying a concert at the famous blue church. The show starts at 6pm so we take an hour to explore the shops in town. We notice that Windstar appears to be shooting promotional videos as well. We see the camera crew in town.

Smiling woman stands on a colorful path leading to a blue church with mountains in the background, under a clear sky.

The first concert ends at 5:55pm and the church empties onto the rainbow path. The 6pm guests stand to the side to allow the church to empty and then we file into the small church. We all take our seats and the show begins quickly. There are two performers: one playing the guitar and one singing. They play a mix of mostly Icelandic songs and each one has a story. They interweave Icelandic tales in-between songs and after a few dark stories they tell us that all Icelandic stories are dark. If it’s not dark, it’s because it was stolen from somewhere else. Christmas folklore has Grýla and the Yule Cat. Grýla is the mother of the 13 trolls and descends from the mountains around Christmas to eat mischievous children. You better hope you get new clothes for Christmas. If not, the Yule Cat will eat you.

Singers perform in a church. Toys include a snarling cat and a witch. A vintage photo shows men in a boat. Colors are warm and bright.

We return back to the ship for dinner. French onion soup, lamb, and chocolate cake are on the menu for me. The French onion soup was the perfect way to warm up after exploring outside.

Three dishes: French onion soup with cheese, chocolate dessert with raspberries and flowers, and beef stew with mashed potatoes on white plates.
